Interested in Importing U.S. Cheese to Your Country?

The United States produces about six million metric tons of cheese each year. In Wisconsin, 3.4 billion pounds of cheese are produced on an annual basis. In fact, the state is home to nearly a quarter of the country’s dairy farmers and has more than 1,200 different producers of cheese.

Wisconsin has more than 600 types of cheese, which are classified by type of milk (e.g., cow, goat, etc.), age, texture, flavor and preparation. Popular varieties include cheddar, mozzarella and alpine-style (e.g. Gruyere).

Wisconsin’s cheeses have been nationally and internationally recognized. At the biannual World Championship Cheese Contest held in Madison, Wis., the state’s cheese and dairy companies won nearly one-third of the awards.
